Title: "Life in Business"
Speaker: Daniel Yoon J.D
Every Business Needs a Plan.
No matter what you do, your business will eventually either be owned by someone else or liquidated.
What are you doing to financially prepare your family for that event?
Your business creates wealth for your family, but it also drives your income taxes higher and higher.
Are you doing anything to remove some of your after-tax dollars from the cycle of income taxation to create a source of tax-free future income?
Do you want to retire from your business someday, or do you want to own it for your entire life?
Have you made plans in advance to ensure you accomplish those goals?
Do you have any employees whose departure from your business would cause a significant negative economic impact?
What are you doing to retain those employees and protect your business?

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine whether periodontal residents could enhance their ability to assess the pain levels experienced by their patients from probing, using visual analog scale (VAS) to record pain. We hypothesized that with increasing experience by repeated comparisons of the patients' VAS pain ratings with independent ratings by the residents, they would improve their ability to assess their patients' pain experiences. Methods: For each of three periodontal residents, 40 consecutive patients with periodontal disease were asked to express the degree of pain they experienced during the probing. Independently, the residents rated the pain levels they perceived that the patients experienced. Subsequently, the residents compared the two VAS ratings and discussed differences in ratings with the patients. Descriptive statistics and intraclass correlation coefficients were used to analyze the findings. Results: Differences between patients' and residents' VAS scores gradually became smaller over time for two of the residents. Results for the third resident were less compelling. Conclusions: This study indicated that the training program improved the residents' ability to estimate the pain experiences of their patients, at least for two of the three participating residents. This training program, using periodontal probing as a model, could serve as an educational tool for students and practitioners who want to improve their sensitivity to their patients' pain experiences.

The response of osteoblastic cells to a thin film of poorly crystalline calcium phosphate apatite crystals (PCA) was examined in vitro. The PCA thin film was prepared on polystyrene culture dishes using highly metastable calcium phosphate ion solution at low temperatures. The PCA thin film was formed through fusion and transformation of granular calcium phosphate particles, which had initially formed on the surface, into a film of calcium phosphate apatite crystal. The PCA thin film was used for cell culture without additional surface treatment. The osteoblastic cell behaviors including adhesion, proliferation, expression of the marker genes, and calcified matrix formation were examined on the PCA thin film using primary osteoblasts or MC3T3-E1 cells. The cells were well attached and had spread in a slender shape over the PCA thin film. The extent of cell proliferation on the PCA thin film is as much as on the plain dishes. In addition, a much larger number of calcified nodules had formed on the PCA thin film than on the plain dish. The expression of the marker genes such as alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, osteopontin, osteonectin was apparent. These results demonstrate that the osteoblasts exhibit a full spectrum of cellular activity including the adequate differentiation on the PCA thin film. Therefore, a PCA thin film can be used as a coating material for biomaterials where the surface is not adequate for inducing the full activity of bone cells.

Abstract; The immediate implant is a technique to place each fixture by performing an osteotomy immediately after extraction of teeth that can not be maintained due to various causes. The advantages of the immediate implant are well known as a reduction in the number of operations and shortening of the overall length of the treatment period. However, it is impossible to perform in all cases because there are some restrictions for various reasons. In addition, because success rates are known to be technically sensitive, there are additional considerations to consider in comparison with conventional (delayed) implant technics. In this lecture, I would like to represent the basic concept of the immediate implant and the method of overcomes the anatomical limitations

Title: New Approach for Adult Orthodontic Therapy
Speaker: Junseung Oh DDS
Synopsis
As longevity of human life increases, the generation called Neo-middle ages (60 to75) has been emerged. They are interested in Esthetics including dental esthetics. In order to meet this demand, a new technique utilizing minimal orthodontic force close to physiologic force has been introduced. This technique will be applied not only for young generations but for older generations since the minimal orthodontic force will reduce various complications in adult orthodontic cases.
This technique will be indicated as Invisalign technique as well and synergistic when is combined with it. So this new technique will be a good treatment modality to enhance esthetic dental treatment.

Title: Complications related to Dento-alveolar Surgery.
Speaker: Fariborz Farnad, DMD, Diplomate Oral Maxillofacial Surgery
Synopsis
The complications related to dento-alveolar surgical procedures can be categorized as local or systemic.
Local factors causing pain, swelling, bleeding, infection or nerve disturbances can mostly be avoided by having required diagnostic tools and improving surgical techniques. Accurate diagnosis and reasonable timing are the most important factors to treat these complications.
Systemic factors affecting dento-alveolar surgery complications are either related to patients’ medical condition or a side effect of the mediation. Treating patients with medical conditions such as cardiac disease or artificial joint mandates updated knowledge of recommended precautions or required pre-medications. Also the treating dentist has to be familiar with pharmacological considerations related to mediations such as bisphosphonates, heparin or coumadin to request their adjustment as necessary.
About Lecturer:
Dr. Fariborz Farnad is an American Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. He is a Clinical Professor at UCLA Dental School and former Director of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at University of Southern California, School of Dentistry.

Hong, Y J Kim, HW Lee et al. "Osteoblastic cell response to thin film of poorly crystalline calcium phosphate apatite formed at low temperatures." Biomaterials 24. (2003): 2977-2984. ( 2/2003 )
